If you have a child who loves axolotls, this axolotl bedroom makeover is for you! My 9-year-old has been begging me to redo her room and I had so much fun bringing her vision to life with cute decor, fun pops of color, and playful under-the-sea touches. Today I’m sharing all of our axolotl bedroom ideas and the decor pieces we used to create this adorable kid’s room.

Furniture for an axolotl themed bedroom:
The catalyst for Winnie’s bedroom refresh? Her relentless, years-long campaign for bunk beds. She has been lobbying hard. I held the line for as long as possible because, frankly, the thought of climbing a ladder every time I needed to change the sheets was enough to make me reject the idea on principle. But…we finally caved. We got her bed here, and my husband got the honor of assembling it from what arrived as one giant, mildly threatening box.
Before we could even move the bunk bed in though, we had to repaint her accent wall. Which meant saying goodbye to her former room. Before this makeover, her room was fully Australian-themed (yes, complete with koalas) and featured an accent wall painted her favorite color: purple. It was cute, quirky, and very much her, until she decided she was apparently done living in the Outback and ready to enter her axolotl era.

To switch her accent wall over to teal, we headed off to Home Depot to have Winnie look at paint swatches. She decided on Behr’s “Rainwater” which tied in well with her desk and bedding. Luckily for me, her old rug and sheets were the perfect axolotl pink, so all I had to do was buy a second set of sheets for the other bed. My oldest daughter had a pink gaming chair she was looking to get out of her room, so I put it in Winnie’s. And then I displayed her stuffed axolotls on the bottom bunk. She claimed the top as hers.

Axolotl themed decor:
Naturally, we needed to add a few decorations to tie it all together. Luckily for me, the kid already has a fuck-ton of 3D printed axolotls to go alongside all the stuffed ones. I put those on top of her organizational cube storage (complete with cubes that tied in all of her colors.) Then, I purchased this adorable canvas wall art to tie in the teals and pinks. And I still kept up this custom surfboard I had made when I was pregnant with her. I don’t have the heart to take it down and the colors still worked with her new room.

For Christmas, we gave her this personalized axolotl sign long before we realized her room would eventually become a full-blown axolotl kingdom. Clearly, we were unknowingly feeding the obsession. Then I snagged these axolotl bins and hamper. Apparently once you start buying axolotl decor, there is no turning back. Her drapes and light-up vines carried over from her previous room. And then I grabbed this bin to hold her art supplies on her desk.

And the axolotl in the fish tank on her storage bins? That’s an inside joke. My dad kept threatening to get Winnie a real pet axolotl for Christmas…only to show up with a stuffed axolotl inside a toy tank instead. It was complete with axolotl-printed fabric from my stepmom, because apparently this was a coordinated production. Honestly, it may be the most on-brand gift she received.

For some little finishing touches, I tossed her axolotl throw blanket over her gaming chair. Then I put all of her lotions and body sprays in this axolotl pink rolling cart. And she’s had this light up crystal ball with an axolotl in it for years. So that got proudly displayed on her desk. Winnie’s dresser is from American Furniture Warehouse, though they no longer carry it. But it matches her bunk beds perfectly since they are both bright white.

And that’s the final axolotl takeover. What started as “maybe a few axolotl accents” somehow turned into a full-blown amphibian empire, and honestly, I have zero regrets. She loves it, we survived redoing it, and our house already contained a truly alarming number of axolotls. If you want to see her old Australian themed room, read here.
