Fall capsule wardrobe season is officially here, which means I’ve once again convinced myself that this is the year I’m going to have a perfectly curated closet. You know, the kind where every piece magically goes with everything else, getting dressed takes approximately 30 seconds, and my closet no longer looks like a TJ Maxx clearance rack exploded. If you’ve been there too, you’re in the right place.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to build a fall capsule wardrobe for 2026. From the must-have basics to the trendier pieces worth adding. I’ll also share where to shop for each item, whether you’re looking to splurge a little or score a great deal, so you can create a closet full of outfits you’ll actually want to wear all season long.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe tops:

I’m going to do my best here to keep your closet from turning into a graveyard of “cute tops” that only match one pair of pants. The goal of a capsule wardrobe is that every top earns its keep and plays nicely with every bottom. Right now, I’m focusing on transitional pieces that can take you from those “Is it 80 degrees or 45?” fall days to full-on sweater weather. Give me a crisp white tee with structured denim while the leaves are just starting to turn, and once the temperatures drop, you’ll find me living in cozy sweaters and baggier jeans.

Here are the tops I consider non-negotiables:

A basic white tee (because it literally goes with everything). A v-neck tee in your favorite neutral, black, gray, taupe…you really can’t go wrong. A longline tee for those leggings days when you want to be comfortable but still look like you have your life together. A long-sleeve black top, which is basically the MVP of fall. Layer it under your T-shirts for that ’90s vibe, wear it under hoodies and sweaters when it gets chilly, or wear it on its own for an effortlessly classic look. A tailored button-down shirt. I usually wear mine open with a fitted tank underneath and the sleeves rolled up while it’s still warm. Once fall fully settles in, button it up with your favorite denim or black leggings and suddenly you look like you have a standing coffee date in a Nancy Meyers movie.

Then, I love a chunky or knit sweater in a neutral tone. I own this one in two different colors! I own and love this long-sleeved Free People top because even on my 5’9 frame, the sleeves are plenty long. It’s very thin so I actually bought this to layer under this dress for our Paris trip! Lastly, you need a sweater in a jewel tone. I’m a sucker for anything in burgundy or plum for Fall. Plus, all of these tops below can mix and match with the denim and pants I recommend. And they’re also such great neutrals that you can add any fall accessory to them like a knit scarf, a head scarf, or my fave – delicate layered necklaces or layered bracelets.

Fall capsule wardrobe denim and pants:

If I can convince you to splurge on just one thing, let it be a really good pair of denim. A great pair of jeans will do more heavy lifting in your wardrobe than just about anything else. I am an unapologetic sucker for Mother Denim, but at around $300 a pair, I usually wait until they’re on sale before I pull the trigger. (Pro tip: the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale always has several great options.) I also love Rag & Bone. They’re another brand that somehow makes me forget my credit card has limits.

One word of advice if you’re tall: read the reviews before you buy. A lot of premium denim brands don’t make “long” inseams, so my shopping strategy is simple. I scroll until I find someone who’s 5’4″ angrily complaining, “These were way too long!” That’s when I add them to my cart with the confidence of someone who just cracked the Da Vinci Code.

Now, I realize denim is a deeply personal relationship. Some people swear by bootcut jeans, others are loyal to straight-leg styles. And then there are the brave souls confidently rocking barrel jeans. On one woman they look effortlessly chic. The next? Frumpy as fuck. That’s just the cruel reality of denim. So instead of telling you exactly which cut you have to wear, I’d rather suggest the types of jeans every capsule wardrobe should include.

Start with one tailored pair that you could wear to a meeting, dinner, or whenever you want to look like you have your life together. Then add a fun pair that makes you excited to get dressed for girls’ night, brunch, or date night. I’d also keep a tailored pair of black pants on hand because eventually life will throw you an event where ripped jeans and sneakers just aren’t the vibe. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, a patterned pair of jeans can be surprisingly versatile while adding some personality to your closet.

And finally, let’s talk about the GOAT: Spanx faux leather leggings. They are hands-down one of my favorite fall wardrobe staples. Throw on an oversized sweater, ankle boots, and these leggings, and congratulations, you’ve just become every Pinterest fall outfit from the last five years. The best part? I’ve had the same pair for years, and somehow they’re still just as stylish as the day I bought them. They also do wonders for sucking in what needs sucked in and elevating your ass. Who doesn’t love that?

Fall capsule wardrobe – shoes:

Alright, folks. We’ve finally arrived at my favorite category: shoes. Blame my 13 years as a retail manager at DSW, or the fact that I grew up believing Carrie Bradshaw’s closet was a perfectly reasonable life goal. Either way, I will never stop buying shoes. You don’t need all of these shoes, but I guarantee that if you have the majority of them, you’ll be set for YEARS! The first must-have is a classic pair of black riding boots. I love an over-the-knee style with a nearly flat heel because they’re actually comfortable enough to wear all day. They’re also fitted enough through the calf that you can wear them under looser jeans or over leggings.

Next up, and the pair I wear more than anything else, are basic bitch Uggs. I said what I said. I don’t care which style you choose. Mini, Ultra Mini, Classic Short. Just get yourself a cozy caramel-colored pair and accept that you’re about to become the happiest person in the Starbucks drive-thru. When I’m feeling a little extra (which, let’s be honest, is often), I also love adding a beautiful pair of leather or suede boots in a warm caramel or cognac color. They instantly make any outfit look more polished and pair perfectly with denim and all those neutral tops you’ve been collecting. I love any leather boot by Frye or Freebird because they just get better with age.

Then, I love a classic flat like either a penny loafer or ballet flat. Bonus points if they are in a pretty beige or taupe tone. Taupe shoes always elongate your legs, even when they’re flat shoes so just keep that in mind my short queens.

Next, you’ll want a dressier pair of black heeled boots. These are the ones you pull out when leggings and Uggs just aren’t going to cut it. They look amazing with dresses, skirts, and tucked under tailored trousers when you’re trying to convince people you’re a functioning adult. For casual days with no snow on the ground, I almost always reach for a pair of black combat boots. Dust off those ol’ Doc Martins girls, they’re fucking back! They give jeans a little edge and somehow make even the most basic outfit look intentional. And they say, “Yes, I could hike a mountain…but I’m actually just going to Target.”

And if you live somewhere that experiences actual winter (looking at you, fellow Coloradans), do yourself a favor and invest in a good pair of neutral or black snow boots. Sorel can do no wrong in my book. They’re warm, comfortable, and unlike the hideous moon boots we all wore as kids. Lastly, a crisp white pair of sneakers never go out of style. Great under those jeans or even with the Spanx leggings and an oversized hoodie. It doesn’t matter the brand, just get a solid white pair and call it a day.

Fall capsule wardrobe – Outerwear:

No fall wardrobe is complete without a few classic outerwear pieces that you’ll wear year after year. This is one category where I don’t mind spending a little more because trends come and go, but a great coat lasts forever. For those crisp fall days that aren’t too cold, I reach for a tailored pea coat or a classic trench coat. They instantly make any outfit look more expensive, even if you’re wearing leggings underneath and hoping no one notices.

For date nights or girls’ nights, toss on a structured leather jacket. Throw one over a t-shirt and jeans, and suddenly you’ve gone from “I just ran errands” to “I definitely planned this outfit.” When you need to look polished, a well-fitting blazer is a wardrobe workhorse. Wear it with jeans, trousers, dresses…honestly, it makes just about everything look more put together.

And finally, for my cold-weather girlies, don’t skimp on a good winter coat. My husband bought me this Canada Goose jacket for Christmas years ago. It still looks practically brand new despite surviving countless Colorado winters. Yes, the price tag hurts a little. But so does frostbite, and this coat has outlasted at least a dozen fast-fashion jackets I would’ve bought instead. I consider it one of the best investment pieces in my closet.

Accessories:

Now for the fun part: accessorizing the shit out of all those basics and investment pieces you’ve collected. This is where your capsule wardrobe gets a little personality. I love this gorgeous burgundy bag, and I recently picked up this dark purple Free People bag. Of course, you can never go wrong with a suede tote, it’s one of those pieces that somehow never goes out of style.

Keep your jewelry simple with a pair of hoops, stud earrings, a pendant necklace, and a classic watch. I’m also a sucker for anything Burberry. I bought Vince this scarf for Christmas one year, and now I find myself drooling over their handbags every time I walk by. Finish everything off with a cashmere scarf, a neutral winter beanie, and your favorite pair of aviators, and congratulations! You’ve officially accessorized like someone who has their life together.
