We are halfway through January, so I figured I’d share some wellness hacks I am adding to my routine. Full disclosure – these aren’t workout tips. I haven’t worked out in about nine months and we have our own home gym. (Yikes!) But you guys know to expect brutal honesty. So, these hacks are more of the non-athletic persuasion. Let’s dive in.

wellness hacks

Skincare Wellness Hacks:

Let’s start with my big splurge for this year when it comes to skin care. I purchased the Omnilux contour LED face mask. You’re supposed to use it 4-5 times per week to start. The fact that it only takes 10 minutes per night has made it easy for me to stick to it so far. According to their website, “This works to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, as well as help reduce the appearance of pigmentation and redness. Promote younger-looking skin. All natural. No pain, side effects, or downtime.” I did take a “before” photo so that I can see if I notice a difference in a few months.

Next, I bought this facial steamer. Truly, I did it mainly to shoot some extra moisture onto my dry-as-fuck face. Winters in Colorado are brutal, so I use this to steam my face, open my pores, and then slather on my skin care. My last two skincare wellness hacks are this face wash and this serum. I’ll be honest, I get the face wash at the Med Spa that I go to. It cleanses the skin while providing skin-lightening treatment to leave you with an even, radiant complexion. And the serum I discovered after listening to a wellness podcast. It’s a peptide-powered serum inspired by the effects of anti-wrinkle neurotoxin injections, proven to reduce the appearance of 9 types of expression lines and reveal glass skin radiance. Basically, for the non-Botox girlies like me, this shit is liquid gold.

mental wellness

Mental Wellness Hacks:

We can’t talk about wellness without getting our heads straight. I have yet to try meditation so I figured I’d take baby steps by journaling instead. When shopping at Target, I found this journal and was immediately intrigued. I definitely believe in the power of positive thinking, so I was drawn to the fact that this book focuses on that. And it was on the shelf next to this shadow journal, written by the same woman. So I snagged both!

The shadow work one so far has been interesting because it definitely deals more with letting go of old baggage. The book states, “Based on highly effective therapeutic practices, this interactive journal guides you on an exploration through the hidden aspects of your psyche, to help you confront and embrace your shadow self. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, loneliness, or confusion, you’ll find plenty of tools to help you here.” It sounds heavy, but it’s insightful! I have definitely held onto shit that I thought I had let go of!

The third book above is just one I love. I think I’ve highlighted a trillion sentences in it at this point. I love this review because it nails the vibe of the book: “Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited–not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault. Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them.” I couldn’t agree more. This book is like a hilarious, painfully insightful self-help book!

I don’t know about you, but I know that when I don’t sleep well, my mental capacity (and good attitude) go right down the shitter. So I enjoy a good calming sleep spray that I mist my pillow with at night. It feels bougie but is a simple step to wind me down. And it gets my head in that mental space where I know it’s time to sleep.

My last mental wellness hack is more of a general one. I have been eyeing the Oura Ring for quite some time, and finally pulled the trigger. It tracks way more than the Apple Watch, and let’s face it – it’s a helluva lot more comfortable to wear when sleeping. I love that it dives very deep into your data. It tracks so many things with my sleep that my watch doesn’t. For starters, it gives you stats on REM sleep, deep sleep, latency, timing, and overall restfulness. It also tracks fitness like the Apple Watch but is a more accurate step and calorie counter. Overall, I’ve been impressed with the amount of data my tiny little stalker can collect and decipher!

I ended up going with the gold Oura Ring due to the fact that it had better reviews for durability. Their rings are sized differently than standard ones, so it’s worth paying the $10 for the sizer. (Plus, Amazon takes that $10 you spend on the ring sizer, and applies it to the ring purchase once you get it!)

Other Wellness Hacks:

For starters, we aren’t getting any younger ladies. So that’s why I never miss taking my vitamins. I don’t take a ton but there are two I never miss. My basic bitch multivitamin, and my Nutrafol. Nutrafol is by no means necessary, but it has been a game-changer for my hair! I’ve been taking it over a year now and it’s crazy how much more full my hair is, not to mention how much faster it grows. And trust me, I’ve tried every hair growth supplement on the market!

Next, drink your fucking water. You already know this. If it takes you sipping it out of a cute tumbler to increase your uptake, I won’t judge. This is the most basic thing you can do to give yourself more energy, have your skin and hair look better, the list goes on and on.

This item may not be necessarily a wellness one, but it is a life-changing one if you live in a cold climate. It’s a towel warmer, and it is worth its weight in gold. My husband and I are both tall so we use giant bath sheets, and this towel warmer fits one bath sheet without issue. You can have it stay on for 15, 30, or 45 minutes until it automatically shuts off. (There is also a power button so you can manually turn it off if need be.) I toss my towel in, turn it on, shower, and when I get out, my towel is warm and toasty. My oldest daughter has been coming in to use our shower just to use the warmer, that’s how fantastic it is.

The last two things I added are random as fuck. But to me, I don’t feel ready to take the day by the balls until I get some caffeine. I either make a latte with my espresso machine, or just make a French press coffee. No matter which thing I make, I use good coffee beans. I am not saying this ritual is healthy, but it makes me feel good and is a personal ritual. And any “wellness hack” that puts you in a good state of mind without forfeiting your health is okay by me.

I realize my wellness hacks above didn’t include working out or anything of that nature. I do have blogs on what my routine was when I was actively working out here and here though. And the one thing I do by nature is get in at least 10,000 (usually for me it’s around 12,000) steps a day. I realize that sounds as basic as telling you to drink more water, but it’ll blow your mind how few people get that many steps in during the day. I tend to get those steps in just by doing my normal running around. But if there is a day I’ve been more sedentary (like when I write blogs), I’ll take the dog for a walk or just get outside and go walk. It’s not physically strenuous, gets me out in the fresh air, and keeps everything moving.

I hope some of these small wellness hacks help inspire you to create your own. (Or at least be aware of the little day-to-day things you do that make you feel well overall.)
